If that is so, then it begs some vary profound questions - rather more profound than Putin's simple allegation of a stunt to help McCain too. The level and ruthless effectiveness of the Russian response may (or may not) have surprised Washington/NATO but that the Georgian assault could have taken place without both the fore-knowledge and therefore a green light from Washington borders on the ridiculous. Either that or the US military and intelligence services (embedded in the Saakashvili regime as they undoubtedly are) were grossly incompetent (again???).<BR/><BR/>I fear there are much deeper, Machiavellian motives in play here and that this was a major gambit on Brzezinski's Grand Chessboard.
